While getting your exercise is always important; in order to be completely healthy, you have to get the right types of exercise, and you need to be getting them in the right way. What you might not have known is that the type of exercise you are getting is just as important as actually getting it. No matter who you are cardiovascular activity is necessary for your well-being and a good quality of life. There are two kinds of cardiovascular activity: aerobic and anaerobic. Combining anaerobic exercise with your aerobic exercise is the best way to make sure you are getting the most out of your workout.

anaerobic exerciseI’m sure you know what aerobic exercise looks like but what is it really? Aerobic exercise refers to exercise that requires the consumption of substantially more oxygen than at rest. It involves repeated rhythmic movements of the large muscles of your body, such as those in your arms or legs. Aerobic means with oxygen. Because you need more oxygen to do aerobic exercise, you breathe more rapidly and deeply to get extra oxygen into your lungs. Your heart also beats faster to deliver more oxygen-carrying blood from your lungs to your muscles. Examples of aerobic exercise include brisk walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, dancing, cross-country skiing, ice-skating, kayaking, roller-blading, and aerobic dance (often simply called aerobics).

anaerobic exerciseAnaerobic means the exercise is so strenuous it uses oxygen faster than your body can replenish it. Anaerobic means without oxygen. Anaerobic exercise is an exercise performed at a high intensity or an all-out effort of short duration, such as a 100 meter sprint, all types of sprints (running, biking, etc.), or a clean-and-jerk in weight-lifting. Other anaerobic exercises include climbing, long jump, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, leg lifts, squat thrusts, interval training, isometrics, or any rapid burst of hard exercise. Anaerobic exercise builds muscle. It can also help with some symptoms of some diseases (like arthritis and osteoporosis). Some people use it to get that rugged, buff look.

This way you are getting your heart rate pumping with the aerobic exercise, and with the anaerobic exercise you are allowing yourself to do strength training, which is also very important for your bodyโ€™s health. In short, aerobic exercise will help you to build heart and lung health and burn fat, while anaerobic exercise will help you build muscle.

This is going to give you the proper balance of exercise in general. This is really your best shot at being competently healthy. And both aerobic and anaerobic exercise burns fat. However, they do so in different ways and ultimately work better together to help you achieve your ideal weight and physique.

The important idea behind exercise today, is to get up and get moving! There are more activities than ever to choose from, whether it is a new activity or an old one. Find something you enjoy doing and get moving to a healthier life. All of us need to work out in order to stay healthy and having a balanced routine will make sure we are getting the most benefit from it.

    I used to work at a fitness club. The owner told me only about 30 to 40 percent of the members actually attended the gym, with aerobics like everything else it is the work you put in.

  • I haven’t used it yet, but I’m excited too. The design is nice and the strap seems to be very comfortable. The bag has a bit yellow-greenish tint, but I hope that goes away. My mat of which I, unfortunately, don’t know the measurements fits with lots of extra room, but I think my mat is kind of thin. The material seems sturdy and the pocket is handy.
